Worship Leader:  Dale Larocque

CENTERING HYMN:   TFWS #2165  – “Cry of My Heart”

MISSION STATEMENT:  “We are the evidence of God’s presence in the world”

CALL TO WORSHIP:  Responsive –

L.  Sing and rejoice, O daughter Zion!

P.  For lo, I will come and dwell in your midst, says the Lord.

L.  Many nations shall join themselves to the Lord in that day.

P.  And shall be my people, and I will dwell in your midst.

L.  We know what time it is and how it is now the moment we wake from sleep.

P. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near.

All: Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.

(Book of Worship 242-243)

Jeremiah 33:14-16 & Luke 21:25-36

Reader One: We have endured these past few years and know that there is more to face before us. We don’t know if we have the strength to withstand what might be around the next corner. And we wonder who will stand with us, who will have our back, who will occupy our corner.

Reader Two: Who is with us? That is what we begin to wonder about these days. Who will light our way and chart our course? Who is on our side, who will welcome us home again?

Reader One: Home. The prophet Jeremiah speaks of a branch that will be raised. Jesus spoke of a Son of Man that will descend. Both point to Hope. A hope that calls us home. Our true home, where we’re welcomed and loved and included. Where there is justice and equality and peace, it’s time, this Advent season, time to return home.

Reader Two: We light this candle as a sign of our hope, our strong hope that there is a way to go home. To the home in Christ starts with us, and it begins here, and it starts now. It’s time to return home.

(Light the first candle on the Advent wreath)

HYMN:   UMH  #211  “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”

Jesus, we pray for all your beloved children. Sometimes we are not aware of their needs, so we assume that all is well, but behind the scene, Lord, they are suffering. We often pay attention to our own needs, and we do not hear your voice calling on us to feed thy lambs. Lord, have mercy on us. You taught us that your Kingdom belongs to the children. Loving God, please realign us to love every child you put on our path truly. Direct us to see you in their eyes and hear you in their voices. Let your Holy Spirit whisper the word of wisdom into our ears daily – “whatever we do to the least of your brothers, we do it to you.” We pray in your name and the children of thy Kingdom. Amen.

Merciful God, you sent your messengers, the prophets, to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation.
Give us the grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins,
That we may greet with HOPE the coming of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer;
Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
One God, now and forever. Amen  (BOW)

WORD OF ASSURANCE:  —————  Dale Larocque

O come, O come, Emmanuel.
May the Spirit of Advent remind us, the people of God, that Jesus, the Son of God, became human to glorify his Father and redeem our sins.  O come, O Come, Emmanuel.

THE LORD’S PRAYER: – UMH # 895 – in unison —— Dale Larocque

Our Father, who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the Kingdom and the power, and the glory,
forever. Amen.

THE GIVER’S PRAYER: – in unison ———————— Sharon McAdam-Bennett
God, may your Holy Spirit warm my heart and cause me to share my blessings with others. I am grateful for your love Lord Jesus. Amen.

Let me go and do all the good I can,
By all the means I can,
In all the ways I can,
At all the places I can.
At all times, I can.
To all the people I can,
As long as ever I can. “Master, let me see again.”

POSTLUDE: UMH #672 verse 1————Jayne Thompson

(WORDS: Jeremiah E. Rankin, 1880, MUSIC: William G. Tomer, 1880)

Sharon McAdam-Bennett

Mighty God, prepare the world for your rule,
For we long for the day when there shall be no more crying or tears,
And death will be destroyed.
Help us to share the ministry of christ
And be agents of his compassion.
Especially we pray for the nations of the earth and peace in the world
For victims and survivors of violence.
We pray for those who are sick and suffering.
We pray for our families and friends.
Lord, we pray for the Church and those who serve in Christ’s name.
All this, we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
